The murder of Elda Ramos is not the first, nor will it be the last, femicide in El Salvador. It is another example of the violent and macho gender-based violence that day in day out assaults and violates thousands of women in El Salvador, and as in the case of Elda, ends in women’s deaths.
Violence against women, when the man believes he owns women and their lives, is frequently made invisible by institutions and the media that categorise these acts as “crimes of passion”. In fact, it is the predominant macho culture that attacks, discriminates, subordinates and kills women.
