One World Action's approach has enabled communities to access better, cheaper and more accountable services – including health, sanitation and education.
One ground-breaking project was the Luanda Urban Poverty Programme (LUPP) which One World Action implemented from 1999 to 2011.
Among LUPP's numerous achievements were: the establishment of community-managed water standposts providing clean water to 74,000 residents, reducing the cost of water by up to 20 times, and doubling the quantity of water used by each individual to reach minimum recommended levels. LUPP's community-organised and operated creches were replicated in all 18 provinces throughout the country.
Government ministries have adopted the LUPP model of community management, which has proven to be very effective in providing and maintaining urban services.
Through our rights-based approach we have also helped women access sexual and reproductive health services, enabling them to be healthier and more independent.
Our partner the Coalition of Women Living with HIV/AIDS (COWLHA) actively campaigns to end violence and discrimination against HIV positive women. COWLHA helps women challenge discrimination and has been very successful in raising the profile and voices of HIV positive women and in challenging discrimination. In 2008 COWLHA won the Red Ribbon Award 2008 from the United Nations Development Programme.
