Our Strategy

We work with 41 local partners in 19 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America to create the power and opportunity for the poorest people to transform their own lives. We also campaign in Europe to ensure that the voices of our partners are heard in "rich countries" where decisions are made that will affect their lives.

We work in real partnership with local groups on the ground. All the work we support is initiated by our partners.

Here are some examples of our support to partners and our advocacy work:

In Southern Africa, our Voices Influence Access Project works with partners in Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe to build civil society capacity to influence trade and aid negotiations between their governments and the European Union in the interests of sustainable and equitable development.

In Malawi and Zambia, our partners Manet + and Women for Change, are bringing together people living with HIV/AIDS so that they can have their voices heard and their health needs met.

In Asia we work on issues of governance, inequality and urban poverty. We have a regional programme, Citizen Participation in Local Government, which supports people in Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand and the Philippines to get involved in local politics and to learn from the experiences of different countries.

We work with organisations in India and Bangladesh to protect the rights of informal workers, and supporting trade unions of textile workers and teachers in Cambodia.

We support fishing communities in the Philippines through SIMCARRD to establish secure employment and to take action to prevent over-fishing of their traditional fishing areas.

Our partners, Solidez and FEMUCADI in Nicaragua, work with disabled people, especially women to gather evidence of compliance with existing disability legislation and campaign for stronger and more gender-responsive legislation.

We have recently begun to work with ASCES, the Association of Blind People in El Salvador, supporting its business development programme for blind women.

In Bolivia we work with ACOBOL (Association of Women Councillors of Bolivia) and in Guatemala with Tierra Viva through the Regional Gender and Governance Programme. ACOBOL aims to train women leaders, councillors and elected representatives in local government on gender equity, and to promote women’s rights in local and national legislation. Tierra Viva works in awareness-raising with women on citizenship and political participation.

IOne World Action supports women who mobilise and advocate for their rights. We provide funding, training and support to partners in Asia, Africa and Latin America. We also campaign in Europe to challenge the international policies that make and keep people poor.

n Europe we continue to lobby and campaign on:

We play a leading role in several key networks, including: BOND, GAD (UK Gender and Development Network), AEPF (Asia Europe People’s Forum, WIDE (Network Women in Development Europe), Solidar, PHM (People’s Health Movement) and the GAPS Campaign (for a General Agreement on Public Services).
